He served as a Payload Specialist on Space Shuttle mission STS in , a nearly day mission to study changes in the Earth's atmosphere. Bjarni is the first, and as of ^[update], only Icelandic astronaut.

Early life

Tryggvason was born in Reykjavík, Iceland, on September 21, ^[1] He moved to Canada with his parents when he was eight years old,^[2] and grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia.

After attending high school in Richmond, British Columbia, he obtained a degree in engineering physics from the University of British Columbia in , and subsequently completed postgraduate work in engineering with specialization in applied mathematics and fluid dynamics at the University of Western Ontario.^[3]
